(LEI), is a subsidiary of Leonardo providing a wide range of solutions to defense, medical, automotive, industrial, and scientific applications.  The Laser solutions division of LEI, located in Tucson, Arizona, is a fully vertically integrated manufacturer of laser diode components and systems.  The products manufactured by LEI-Laser Solutions continue to advance the state of the art in laser diode technology and maintain leadership positions in the markets it services.  LEI-Laser Solutions continues to expand it capabilities and products and is seeking a strong candidate to lead the engineering of new products and technology.  Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President (SVP) for LEI-Laser Solutions, the VP of Engineering will lead a team of talented functional managers and engineers in developing the next generation of products and technology to support the growth objectives of the organization.

Job Purpose:
Lead, manage and direct the engineering organization at LEI-Laser Solutions division.  Ensure successful execution of product and technology development programs to meet LEI market demands and growth objectives.  Develop and maintain systems and controls to ensure compliance with financial and quality standards. In conjunction with the LEI CTO, participate in the development of long-term strategic product and technology roadmaps and successfully implement the LEI-Laser Solutions portions of the roadmaps

  • Provided engineering know-how and expertise in all the areas associated with semiconductor laser design, fabrication, packaging, testing and application
  • Manage the technical development of semiconductor laser diode-based products that meet or exceed customer requirements.  This includes managing cost and schedule for both internally funded efforts and customer funded efforts
  • Represent Laser Solutions Division to the LEI CTO in support of developing and executing strategy, technology and product development roadmaps, special initiatives, and engineering best practices
  • Present status of engineering activities to executive management and provide required documentation to CTO in accordance to divisional processes
  • Build, develop, and manage an engineering team capable of carrying out engineering initiatives and supporting long term technology and product development roadmaps     
  • Evaluate performance of individuals in the engineering organization, manage performance gaps, and set goals for the team consistent with organizational goals
  • Develop, secure, and manage yearly departmental budget
  • Identify, procure, and implement hardware and software tools needed to execute engineering initiatives
  • Manage the development of technical and cost proposals to secure customer funded development efforts
  • Participate in program meetings with customers
  • Participate in technical conferences, where appropriate present technical advances at conferences
  • Develop new sources of supply and manage the qualification of suppliers when needed
  • Maintain and manage the new product introduction process and ensure process gates are satisfied to achieve smooth transition to volume manufacturing.
  • Recommend methods, materials and layouts for improvement based on manufacturing needs and capabilities
  • Manage and maintain a technology control plan to ensure regulatory requirements are met
  • Provide technical support for business development activities
  • Reach across divisions to ensure collaborative development activities


Master’s or Ph.D. in EE, Physics, Materials Engineering or related field. A minimum of 10 years experience in engineering management in the field of semiconductor optical devices. Track record in technology development for fabrication of semiconductor based optical devices.  Leadership: a demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Planning: an ability to think ahead and plan over a 2-5 year time span. Management: the ability to organize and manage multiple priorities. Problem analysis and problem resolution at the strategic and functional level. Technical skills in engineering management, quality assurance and costing.
