System Engineer

Leonardo Electronics US Inc. is a US subsidiary of Leonardo, a global high-tech company and one of the key players in Aerospace, Defense, and Security sectors, is seeking a well round energetic Systems/Software Engineer capable of participating in multiple projects simultaneously in real-time embedded software development, requirements development and Radio Frequency (RF) / Electronic Warfare (EW) activities. 

The ideal person for this position is someone with software and either an electrical engineering or mechanical engineering background that is willing to use that knowledge across multiple programs.  The candidate selected for this position will be involved with RF/EW related activities supporting a strong line of products being sold by Leonardo to the US DoD along with being involved in the development, testing, and deployment of the next generation capabilities.  The person selected for this job will be required to have good written and verbal skills, work as an effective team member and interact professionally with the customer.

  • Interfacing with Leonardo, the parent company, to support product development and deliveries.
  • Interfacing with customers as required during technical interchange meetings, design reviews, on site testing, and product delivery support.
  • Interface with suppliers as required to define requirements, participate in peer reviews and verify quality product deliveries.
  • Interface with Business Development and other internal customers to provide technical insight and knowledge on the products Leonardo is developing.
  • Know and understand the Leonardo portfolio of EW systems in the US (e.g. BriteCloud Expendable Active Decoy (EAD), SAGE Electronic Support Measures (ESM) and SEER Radar Warning Receiver) being produced and delivered to the US customers.
  • Know and understand competing and/or complimentary Electronic Warfare systems and apply this knowledge to the development and enhancement of Leonardo products.
  • Know and understand Airworthiness Qualification.
  • Perform testing of hardware and software in a Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL).
  • Write technical papers as needed.
  • Participate in the full engineering lifecycle for software development activities including requirements gathering, generation, traceability, and maintenance; design; development; coding; testing; integration; validation and verification; support; and lessons learned.
  • Collaborate with team-members in all types of technical interchange meetings.
  • Support the development of long-term strategies for tailoring products to meet specific US requirements.
  • Support product installation, test events in the US and accompany potential US Customers to UK test events involving the parent company.
  • Support the development of cost and schedule estimates.


  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US SECRET security clearance (active clearance desired).
  • Minimum of 3-years’ experience in an engineering related career is preferred.
  • Highly polished verbal and written communication skills.  Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential for the communication of information (technical and otherwise) along with the writing of well-structured, readable and concise documents respectively.
  • Experience with standard Microsoft Office PC environment required.
  • Experience with Wind River VxWorks and Workbench or other similar development environments.
  • Experience with Microsoft related programming environment including C++, C#, Visual Studio and TFS for real-time and non-real time software development. 
  • Experience with MATLAB for RF and EW modeling.
  • Experience with IBM Rational (e.g. DOORS, Rhapsody) or other modeling tool (e.g. Cameo) for Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) development activities.
  • Familiarity of commonly used military communication interfaces, such as MIL-STD-1553, EIA232/422/485, and Ethernet.
  • Familiarity with regularly used military standards for equipment operation, such as MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-704.
  • Familiarity with certification and design assurance guidelines DO-178, DO-254 and CAST-32A are desired.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships to effectively work both alone or in a team to meet project schedules, budgets and requirements.
  • Ability to prioritize and respond dynamically to a rapidly changing environment.
