Optical Engineer

Optical Engineer to design and develop optical systems for conditioning laser diode sources for fiber coupling, free space illumination, and pump laser design. 


  • Design and analysis of optical systems and components including:
    • Laser diode source based illumination systems
    • High power fiber coupled devices
    • Micro optical systems for laser diode beam conditioning
    • Cylindrical/Spherical telescopes and beam expanders
    • Optical system tolerancing and sensitivity analysis
    • Athermal optical system design
    • Optical test system design and specification
    • Optical test equipment specification and procurement
    • Optical component specification, including shape and coating requirements 
  • Develop and improve optical alignment procedures and processes
  • Solid state laser systems
  • Optical design utilizing Zemax OpticStudio with both sequential and non-sequential modes
  • Prepare and present design reviews internally and to customers with clear and effective communication
  • Solve difficult problems with sound engineering principles and out of the box thinking
  • Assemble and debug prototypes, working closely with Technicians, Operators, and Engineers of multiple disciplines
  • Create and organize design documentation including presentations, summarized test data, optical test plans
  • Responsible for research, development, and implementation of new technologies to improve power output, reliability, efficiency, SWaP, and robustness of laser arrays and systems


  • Bachelor of Science degree in Optical Engineering/Physics with Optics emphasis from an ABET accredited four-year college or university
  • 2+ years’ experience in a related Engineering field with similar duties for Engineer II
  • 4+ years’ experience in a related Engineering field with similar duties for Engineer III  
  • 6+ years’ experience in a related Engineering field with similar duties for Sr. Engineer I  
  • A history of increasing responsibility and independent thinking  
  • Experience with Zemax OpticStudio, and 
  • Data analysis software such as Matlab, Python, ect
  • Experience with image analysis and laser beam characterization
  • Capable of working in a cleanroom environment  
  • Capable of working hands on up to 50% of the time in the cleanroom

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with technologies for manufacturing precision mechanical components made from various metals and ceramics in low to medium volume  
  • Expert user of OpticStudio
  • Experience with laser systems, including diode arrays, solid-state, and fiber is preferred 
  • Experience with gratings, dichroics, and other forms of laser beam combining
  • Experience with adhesives for attaching and bonding optics
  • Desire to work on products from concept to completion
