Engineering Optical Technician

Responsible for assembly and characterization of laser diode based optical systems. Perform hands-on engineering builds, tests and data collection for high power laser diodes devices.  Assist RD Engineering with new product introduction (NPI), initial build of high power diode lasers and their release to manufacturing.

  • Assemble optical systems with laser diodes and micro optical components.
  • Develop assembly processes in conjunction with optical engineer.
  • Characterize performance of laser diode components and communicate results to the engineering staff
  • Supports engineering activities such as design, test, check-out, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype basic mechanical equipment assembly and electrical component assembly
  • As a skilled specialist, completes tasks in creative and effective ways.    
  • Works on primarily new assignments requiring considerable judgment and initiative. Understands implications of work and makes recommendations for solutions
  • Determine methods and procedures on new assignments. May provide guidance to other nonexempt personnel. Assists in process improvement activity by collaborating with other technicians, supervisor and/or design engineer.   


Must have minimum of 3 years hands-on experience with optical assembly, test and characterization of laser diode components and systems. Experience with fiber coupling and precision opto-mechanical alignment desirable.

Associates degree in optics, electronics or similar field highly preferred.  Familiarity with MS Excel, MS Access, MS Word and PowerPoint desirable. Experience with laser diode diagnostic equipment desirable (beam measurement cameras, oscilloscopes, photo diodes, power supplies, TEC controllers, and spectrometers). Good verbal and written communication skills – ability to graph data and prepare reports. Detail oriented – maintain meticulous records. Be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Job requires extended periods of inspection through an optical microscope. Should be able to work fully gowned for 8 hours in a clean room environment.
